VTOL pioneer Lilium signs record-breaking deal

German electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft manufacturer Lilium has signed a binding sales agreement with Saudia Group for 50 Lilium Jets, with options for an additional 50.

The deal – signed at Lilium’s headquarters near Munich – marks the largest of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and represents the largest reported firm order of eVTOL aircraft by an airline planning to operate them.

The agreement – which follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in October 2022 – includes a schedule of deposit and pre-delivery payments, timeline of future deliveries, guarantees on aircraft performance, and provisions on spare parts, maintenance, and repairs. The parties also intend to sign a comprehensive “Lilium POWER-ON” agreement for aircraft fleet maintenance and support services.

H.E. Engr. Ibrahim Al-Omar, Director General of Saudia Group, said: “Saudia Group is proud to pioneer the MENA region as the first company to acquire all-electric eVTOL jets, which reflects our commitment to continuously reducing our carbon footprint and becoming an industry leader in regional electric aviation.”

The Lilium Jets are expected to revolutionise guest transportation in Saudi Arabia, offering travel distances of up to 175 kilometres at speeds of 250 kilometres per hour. This technology aims to tackle traffic congestion and provide seamless first and last leg connections into Saudia Group’s regional hubs, as well as new point-to-point city connections.

Saudia Group anticipates receiving the first jets in 2026, with operations to be managed by its subsidiary, Saudia Private. The Lilium Jet will feature premium cabins with capacity for up to six passengers plus luggage, aligning with Saudia’s commitment to delivering a premium experience for its guests.

Klaus Roewe, CEO of Lilium, commented: “We are proud of our partnership with a market leading airline such as Saudia. And we are thrilled to be pioneering progress in the eVTOL industry as the eVTOL manufacturer with the largest reported firm purchase order from an international airline that plans to operate the aircraft.”

This deal adds to Lilium’s growing order pipeline, which now consists of 106 firm orders and reservations, 76 options, and approximately 600 aircraft under MOU. The company is reportedly in advanced discussions with additional global carriers looking to electrify regional air travel and reduce carbon emissions.

The partnership between Lilium and Saudia Group not only represents a significant step forward for sustainable aviation but also aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, aiming to diversify the country’s economy and reduce its dependence on oil.

As the eVTOL industry continues to evolve, this agreement could set a precedent for future collaborations between electric aircraft manufacturers and traditional airlines.
