Hikvision cameras supplied to oil drilling platform
To improve the safety and security of the La Santa Maria oil drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico, Hikvision explosion-proof cameras have been installed.
Oil and gas sites face unique security, safety and health challenges, so maximising staff safety is critical.
According to the company, the platform needed a new security solution that provided 24-hour-perimeter-security, fire prevention capabilities and the ability to minimise the risks to staff on the platform.
Qualities of Hikvision’s cameras
To be used, the cameras are required to meet the NEMA-4X anti-corrosion standards.
Hikvision highlights that its cameras are at the standard and ensure durability against the harsh maritime environment.
The explosion proof cameras are protected inside a 316L stainless-steel casings, preventing sparks or heat from encountering potential flammable fumes.
The cameras are equipped with thermal imaging and sensitive fire detection algorithms to ensure that any overheated equipment can be recognised and reported immediately.
This increases the safety of staff and assets on the platform while adhering to environmental regulations.
The functions of the camera work effectively in low-visibility weather conditions such as fog or heavy rain.
Incidents and security
Due to the positioning of the oil platform being closer to land, it has become more vulnerable to security breaches and property damage performed by trespassers.
The new security system may aid it mitigating these types of incidents from happening.
A key feature of Hikvision’s cameras is that they contain light and strobe features to deter trespassers from causing further damage, theft or injury.
The cameras also use an on-board deep learning algorithm to provide powerful analytics functions.
This allows the cameras to generate immediate alerts for specific incidents, including that of the entry of unauthorised people and perimeter invasions.
The algorithm uses intelligent technology to distinguish whether there is a false alarm to triggers such as seabirds, high waves or storms.
The false alarm reduction deep learning algorithm ensures that the time spent by the security team is used efficiently.
Benefits
After the installation of the cameras, the company claims that it should increase staff health and safety, as well as minimise the risk of camera-related sparks that result in fires and explosions.
Additionally, Hikvision says that the corrosion resistant cameras ensure chemical resistance and durability.
This further proves that they are well suited to withstand the saltwater conditions in the Gulf of Mexico.
